At Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha, our kumu dedicate themselves to shaping the next generation of ʻōiwi leaders. For Kumu Appreciation Week, we’re highlighting some of their efforts to help our haumāna grow, ensuring a bright future for our lāhui.
Meet Carl Pao, KS Hawaiʻi
What inspired you to become a kumu?
I was inspired to pursue the life of a kumu because when I did my personal artwork, I would always find myself having onlookers and asking how or why I was doing what I was doing. Next thing you know, I would be sharing and teaching them about my process and purpose. Being an art teacher then became obvious.
Tell us about a time you saw your haumāna use what they’ve learned to make a difference. What did that mean to you?
The time that I witnessed a haumāna use what they had learned from my instruction came when Cory Kamehanaokalā Taum took his artistic skills to the streets and became one of our premier mural artists. More importantly, in our discussions, we talk about the need to create responsibly and show respect for our kūpuna or ‘āina or our future . Cory does that with each and every work of art he creates. For me, that is all that a kumu could ask for: haumāna to go further than we have.
What’s one lesson you hope your haumāna carry forward?
Continue to make a positive contribution to your kūpuna, your ‘ohana, and community through the elevation of your mana. The difference starts with the individual.
What’s your advice for new kumu embracing this kuleana?
As with all endeavors, you need to be yourself and teach to your strengths. Be genuine. Bring passion every day.

To single out just one kumu would be an injustice!
