On October 17, 2019 our second graders got to work with Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project to band ʻUaʻu Kani chicks! The children worked closely with scientists to learn about the ʻUaʻu Kani and their habitat. They got to take a close look at a burrow and at the ʻUaʻu Kani.
Below you will find student quotes about their learning on the field trip:
“They find their burrow by using the sense of smell.” - Keani
“The ʻUaʻu Kani can dig 3 to 4 feet to make their burrow.” - Mosiah
“The adults can hunt for food for as long as a week.” - Kamana Teʻa
“They can dive deep into the ocean when they are diving after food.” - Aiden
“The ʻUaʻu Kani can hold its breath for up to 2 minutes.” - Keō
“The chicks donʻt fly until they are 3 to 4 months old.” - Mandi
