Lent week six: Returning to God during turbulent times

Halelū 31:9-10

E aloha mai ʻoe iaʻu, e Iēhova; no ka mea, ua pilikia au; Ua pau ʻē kuʻu maka i ke kaumaha, a me kuʻu ʻuhane a me kuʻu ʻōpū. No ka mea, ua pau kuʻu ola nei i ke kaumaha, A me kuʻu mau makahiki i ka ʻū ʻana; Ua pau ʻē kuʻu ikaika no kuʻu hewa,Ua paʻuhia hoʻi koʻu mau iwi. – Halelū 31:9-10

Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. – Psalms 31:9-10

He Manaʻo o ke Kahu Manu Naeole KSK ‘96

I have fond memories of college and graduate school; the good moments far outweighed the bad. Even so, I would still have moments of struggle, and those struggles were most intense just before a long, extended break like Christmas. I could see the end just around the corner, but those last few weeks were so excruciatingly long. I was consumed with anguish and groaned like David in Psalm 31.

Week six of Lent is upon us, and many of us feel the words of David and the student's experience away from home. We feel our eyes growing weary because we woke up earlier to spend time with God, and our bodies are grieving because we gave up sugar. We see the end coming as we celebrate Easter next Sunday, but it seems to be taking so excruciatingly long. Let us find hope in the words of David as we hang on for Jesus to meet us in our season of fasting, “‘But I trust in you, Lord’; I say, ‘You are my God’” (Psalms 31:14). May we find the strength to continue trusting our faithful God this week. ʻĀmene.

I continue my strength in God when things get difficult by coming back to Him. When things are out of my control, and when I make mistakes, I come back to God as David did. I take a deep breath and let everything go as I exhale. Life is challenging, but with God, all things are possible. So when life gets tough, I remember how much God loves us. And I keep my faith and trust in Him despite the challenges life throws at us. “But I trust in you, Lord;” I say, “You are my God.” Psalms 31:14.
