Hybrid learning experiences have been a great way to connect with haumāna over the past month. We'll look to increase frequency and options for the rest of the school year.

Kula Waena direction - Hybrid learning models with choice

Nov. 17, 2020

Aloha mai kākou,

We have loved seeing the faces of our haumāna off-screen and in-person these past few weeks as they have come to campus and met up with us at Kumuola for a variety of hands-on learning opportunities. Mahalo to our ʻohana who have partnered with us in providing avenues for maintaining strong instructional practices and wrapping our keiki in aloha and support. We look forward to continuing to see haumāna on-campus more and more often in the coming weeks.

As we prepare for our next phase of hybrid learning, the Kula Waena will ask you to select your preferred learning model for the latter half of the school year (January – May 2021). While described here, you will also see information for our “Snack and Chat” Zoom sessions for Monday, November 16, so that you may ask any questions for clarity before making your final selection.

Our learning models include:

  • Hybrid Learning with an Alternating Schedule – Haumāna will return to face-to-face learning on campus for either Days A or B (please see attached calendar), while continuing synchronous online learning from home on the opposite days. ALL students are defaulted into this learning model.
  • Hybrid Learning with a Daily Schedule – Haumāna will return to campus daily, with face-to-face learning on either Days A or B, while continuing synchronous online learning from campus on the opposite days. To opt into this model, please fill out this google form: https://bit.ly/DAILYHYBRID
  • Full Distance Learning – Haumāna will complete coursework through ASU (Arizona State University) from home, synchronously with our Kumu ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, and have access to our Guidance, Library Media, and Christian Education courses via Canvas. To opt into this model, please make the selection via KSCONNECT.

All FINAL selections must be made by Friday, November 20. “Snack and Chat” sessions were held on Monday to discuss the learning models. If you missed either session, but would like to rewatch, a recording is available. Please contact Isha Charbonneau at ischarbo@ksbe.edu for access to view the session.

KS monitors a variety of measures, both internal and external, daily. Measures include the 7-day average tracking of our county positivity rates. We’re aware of the guidance from the Department of Health for schools, and we will use our own standards that weigh all of the factors involved, with safety remaining our top priority. See the Kamehameha Schools weekly tracking site for COVID-19. We do anticipate remaining in hybrid learning for the rest of the 2020-2021 school year.

Donʻt hesitate to contact our office (982-0400) when you have any questions, concerns, or can share ways in which we might better support you!

It is our honor to continue to serve you through this time.

Me ka ʻoiaʻiʻo,

Heather Tehani Corcoran, Ph.D.
