Make lei this May Day! To celebrate Lā Mei, ASKS is sponsoring a lei making competition for kula kiʻekiʻe haumāna!

Kula Kiʻekiʻe Lei Making Competition

April 22, 2026

Make plans to make lei for Lā Mei this year! To celebrate May Day, ASKS is hosting a lei competition for all of our kula kiʻekiʻe haumāna.

There are four categories:

  • Best Everlasting “Fake” Lei
  • Best Flower Lei
  • Best Candy Lei
  • Most Creative Lei

On Friday, May 1 at the start of lunch, drop off your lei to a designated area by the hula pā and select which category you want to compete in. Judges will review, score and make their determination on the winners. Winners will be awarded a $25 Starbucks Gift Card. Lei should be handmade and not purchased, as we want to recognize the incredible talents, creativity, and craftsmanship of our haumāna!

Weʻll also be enjoying an extended Lunch on the Lawn that day with live entertainment including our Hawaiian Ensemble and music by Just Us Band! If you would like to dance hula, please send us any mele so we can share with the band.

Winners will be announced during the Kūkoa portion of the schedule, before the final period of the day.

Celebrate the traditions of Lā Mei in a different way this year by making it truly lei day! Aloha Wear (please follow all guidelines) and wearing lei on May 1 is encouraged!

Students should follow all Aloha Wear guidelines so these dress days can continue.

Remember to wear your best and reflect a positive appearance.
