Kula Ha'aha'a Celebrates the Season with a Trunk or Treat & Spooktacular Book Swap

Nov. 1, 2017

Contributed by Tiare Sanchez

Merging literacy with 21st Century learning, haumāna designed and created literary-themed costumes using upcycled materials for our Trunk or Treat event this past Friday. Students took a Design Thinking approach to design their costumes after book characters and then finished their creative costumes at home. The evening started off with the Costume Parade where haumāna revealed their costumes and paparazzi parents caught the costume celebrities walking the stage. Notable faces included the salesman from Caps for Sale, a pig with a unique message, Little Red Riding Hood who passed out her own delicious treats, heroes and villains from Star Wars, the Cat in the Hat, Hina, and even a number of aliʻi.

Then it was on to the candy and books. Decorated trunks with book themes, included: Charlie’s chocolate factory, Charlotte’s barn, The Great Pumpkin Patch, Lightning McQueen’s race track, Harold and his Purple Crayon, and the Wild Things just to name a few. Adding to the excitement of this year's event was the equally popular Spooktacular Book Swap. Students brought in in their gently worn and over read books and exchanged them for “new” books. There were hundreds and hundreds of books to choose from.

Mahalo to Kumu Lucas, our Learning Innovation Center Specialist, for coordinating this year’s event and instilling a love for reading within our haumāna while incorporating 21st Century learning and fun into the curriculum. Mahalo to our school, PTSO, and community volunteers who decorated trunks and to our awesome school staff for all their kōkua to provide a great event for our keiki and their ʻohana.
