Kamehameha Schools has created a series of Hawaiian-focused devotionals for Lent, to honor the deep Christian faith of our founder Princess Pauahi. The devotionals were designed to be used by staffers, students and others to celebrate the coming of Easter, so please feel free to share them!

Heluhelu Baibala / Scripture Reading
Mai noho ʻoukou a hoʻohālike me ko ke ao nei; akā, e hoʻopāhaʻohaʻo ʻoukou ma ke ʻano hou ʻana o ko ʻoukou naʻau, i hoʻomaopopo ʻoukou i ko ke Akua makemake, ka pono, ka hōʻoluʻolu, a me ka hemolele. – Roma 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. – Romans 12:2

He manaʻo o ka limahana

The world is full of powerful influences. There’s always something out there that can influence our thoughts and decisions, from how we dress and eat to how we speak or act. Some things are great! While others, not so much. So how can you tell the difference?

When you purposefully fill your naʻau with God’s word, you have created a standard by which your thoughts and actions are measured. This is discernment.

The Bible says that what we think, heavily affects our lawena. God’s word says to instead fix our thoughts on what is pure, lovely; what is truth. Even if you have struggled with negative thinking your whole life, research shows that we can still rewire our brains! It’ll take effort, no doubt. But with Godly guidance, hoʻomau, and faith, your thoughts will no longer be stronger than you. When our thinking becomes Godly thinking, with the help of the Holy Spirit, our lawena will align. This is how we transform, e hoʻopāhaʻohaʻo kākou.

The stresses of this life live in our minds and can have negative effects. Battling with our thoughts is common but it’s not the way we were created to be. Worrying is just a form of unhealthy meditation. God said that although we have to live in this world, we don’t have to be of it. So, start your mind and naʻau renewal – the transformation – by accepting and receiving how fully known, yet fully loved you truly are by the One who made you.

Romans 12:2 means to not let others, or what you see, change the way you feel, or change your naʻau perspective. It means to just live the word of God in your naʻau. This is very important today because of technology, social media, and many other influences. We get influenced and change our perspectives because of what we see other people do and that thinking affects our actions. But when we think differently, we act differently. Hopefully, positively. We must remember to stick with what is pono in our naʻau, and what God says to do because He will always know and show us right from wrong.
