The other week, a good friend was admitted to Queen’s Medical Center with COVID-19. The outpouring of prayers for this young warrior and his ʻohana have been tremendous. We are all family! He and his wife, who works for Kamehameha Schools, have raised all their sons with faith in Jesus and with the encouragement of always being their best. The oldest recently graduated from KS Hawaiʻi, while his two younger brothers are still here in school. As a family, we pray each day and send messages of love to them each morning to bless their hearts and minds with healing peace, the peace of Christ.
With all of this going on, I have recognized one thing that is necessary for us to do, especially with the uptick in coronavirus cases around the world caused by the Delta variant. We must unite and pray for the safety and well-being of all our diligent medical and health care workers who continue to support and care for all of our loved ones. Their calling to care for the sick and injured is a demanding one.
Just think, ever since the first confirmed COVID-19 case here in Hawaiʻi back in March of 2020, there have been over 69,000 documented cases of people testing positive with the virus. Approximately 5% of those individuals ended up being hospitalized. Which, if COVID-19 was the only health problem would be a manageable caseload. However, we still have people being hospitalized with the top two medical conditions – heart disease and cancer – at a rate that surpasses COVID-19 hospital care. Intensive care units are overcrowded and medical workers are laboring longer hours while trying to maintain the safety of their personal households.
In today’s passage of scripture, the Apostle Peter reinforces the beautiful nature of our Lord, master and sovereign, as consoler of all. We need our healers to be strong, wise, and courageous. So, let’s take the time to pray for all those health care workers, first responders and physicians. Let us unite our hearts in prayer, e pule kākou:
“E Ke Akua Mana Loa e, ke hoʻomaikaʻi aku nei mākou iā ʻOe. Lord God Almighty, we praise You. We humbly come before Your throne of grace and mercy to acknowledge Your amazing love and faithfulness. Today, we come together as one lāhui pule to lift up to You for Your blessing our medical workers and professionals here in Hawaiʻi and throughout the world who are caring for our cherished ones. Help them to calm their anxious hearts by casting their worries upon You. Strengthen their resolve to be a helpful and faithful support to those they serve. Lord, safeguard them from harm, protect their families, and bless them with peaceful rest. Finally, empower every medical personnel no matter their role to be heralds of faith, messengers of hope and ambassadors of aloha! We ask these things in the name of Your precious Son, Jesus. Ma ka inoa kau keiki hiwahiwa, ʻAmene.”
