Twenty-three years ago, the Interim Trustees of Kamehameha Schools petitioned the State Probate Court to establish a procedure for the selection of future Trustees of Kamehameha Schools. The Court appointed a Master to review the matter and make recommendations to the Court. In 2000, the Court adopted the procedures recommended by the Master, which have governed the screening, selection and terms of the Trustees for the last 22 years.

Last week, the Trustees petitioned the Probate Court to perform a fresh review of the Trustee selection process through one or more Special Masters. The Trustees have suggested that the Court consider appointing individuals who are familiar with the trustee selection process; for example, those who helped formulate the current Trustee Selection Process, who have gone through the process as an applicant, and/or who have previously served on the Trustee Screening Committee.

The purpose of the request is to determine whether, with the benefit of 20-plus years of experience with the current selection process, improvements could be made to ensure that Kamehameha Schools receives the benefit of the best Trustee candidates and that transitions of Trustees on and off the Board are undertaken effectively.

The filing of this petition should not be taken to imply any dissatisfaction with the current Trustee selection process or with the outcome of that process over the last two decades. Just as the Trustees periodically review their policies and procedures to ensure that they reflect current best practices, the Trustees believe that a periodic review of the Trustee selection process is prudent and consistent with their kuleana to fulfill and sustain the vision, mission and values of Kamehameha Schools.
