Watch one of the performances of "The Battle of Kuamoʻo" presented at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
For only the second time, Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi Hōʻike A Haʻi traveled to the world's largest performing arts festival in Edinburgh, Scotland to present an original Hawaiian language opera. Our haumāna and kumu presented four performances of "The Battle of Kuamoʻo" for audiences at the Fringe in the Central Hall Auditorium.
Our haumāna were participating as part of the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF), leaving another tremendous impression on their peers and program directors. KS Hawaiʻi first presented a Hawaiian opera at the festival in August of 2016, when they shared the opera "Hāʻupu".
Presented through Hawaiian hula, chant, and song, this opera dramatizes the battle between the chief, Kekuaokalani, who wanted to hold onto the ancient Hawaiian religion, and Liholiho, the young king, who wanted to part from the old and lead his people into the modern world.
