Free pop-up testing on a monthly basis will continue in January and will be available for all KS students and faculty/staff.

Updating you on our planning for the new year

Dec. 4, 2020

Aloha nui e ko Kamehameha Hawaiʻi ē,

As we enter the Christmas season and prepare to celebrate this special time of year, we reflect on the experiences and people who enrich our lives and look ahead to the new year with gratitude and hope.

The second half of the school year is four short weeks away. Mahalo to all of our ʻohana for staying informed and indicating your learning model preference for January to May. We expect to remain in hybrid learning through the end of the school year, offering face-to-face and digital learning experiences for our haumāna. Full distance learning will be offered to those who elected that option.

ADDITIONAL PRECAUTION TO START THE NEW YEAR
To minimize the potential risk of COVID-19 spread in our communities resulting from holiday travel and gatherings, all students will start the year via distance learning from home during the first week of school, from January 4-8, 2021. On campus learning will resume on January 11.

VOLUNTARY TESTING WILL CONTINUE
Mahalo to everyone who participated in recent testing events conducted here on campus. We plan to continue free pop-up testing on a monthly basis to monitor how the virus is impacting our school community and to quickly address any testing results so that we can continue operating our kula with the least disruption possible. Testing will be available for all KS students, faculty, and staff. The next testing event will be held on Thursday, January 7 from 2:30 to 6 p.m. at the middle school bus ramp. More details and registration information will be sent in the coming weeks.

CONTINUE TO SUBMIT TRAVEL NOTIFICATIONS; TESTING KITS AVAILABLE
Whether it is to visit loved ones, or just taking a break, personal travel is your choice. However, our KS policy requires notification of travel for inter-island or out-of-state, if you plan or need to be back on-campus or on-site at an activity within 14 days of your return.

Out-of-state travel does require an additional PCR test conducted after the fifth day following your return, if you intend on being on-campus/site within 14 days from your return. You should plan to be off-campus or off-site for at least a week after your return, pending your test result.

Refer to our Student Travel Notifications page for details and links on how to submit your pre- and post-travel notifications.

We know things come up, and should you need to get a testing kit on short notice, we have a limited number of take-home test kits that meet Hawaiʻi Department of Health standards, which may be purchased by KS employees and students. The COVID-19 Saliva Testing Kits are offered through Vault and can be purchased for $119 (cash or check only). To purchase, contact Janis Kanetani, Fiscal Assistant, at jakaneta@ksbe.edu or 982-0035.

Mahalo for your commitment to these new protocols and procedures so that we can continue to keep our campus community safe.

Despite the challenges of this pandemic, we hope that you can continue your holiday traditions in new ways, and remain jolly, bright, and most importantly, healthy, throughout the season.
