For episode 1 of the podcast, Camryn welcomed fellow seniors Koali Ito and Kawehi Kiko to talk about hula and Indigenous art practices.
Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi Kaʻiolanaokaʻawa Class of 2026 senior Camryn Grace decided to create the Share the Poi podcast as her capstone project. She set out with the goal of highlighting and celebrating Hawaiian culture and language through insightful conversations with a diverse group of guests, including alumni, students, and kumu.
Each episode explores personal experiences growing up in Hawaiʻi and the deep impact of Hawaiian traditions, values, and language in their lives, and for some, how they continued to connect to their cultural identity while they moved away from Hawai’i. The vision is to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of Hawaiian culture. "Through storytelling, cultural insight, and the use of ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, I hope to perpetuate, preserve, and spread Hawaiian heritage, especially through modern platforms that are accessible to younger generations," shared Grace.
The manaʻo behind the name “Share the Poi,” is to highlight Hawaiian culture and a pillar of Hawaiian culture is Hāloa, which highlights the creation of Kalo. Kalo was a staple in the ancient Hawaiian diet and it deepend their connection to the ʻāina.
"Sharing of the Poi represents what we are doing on this podcast, sharing and celebrating our culture from our kūpuna in ancient times, to modern practices today," says Grace. Six episodes have been planned for this podcast which is released weekly on Fridays at 11 a.m. The first half of episodes have been release and the final three episodes will be released weekly starting this Friday. All episodes will be available on the Kamehameha Schools YouTube channel in the podcast tab.
Recent episodes have featured current KS Hawaiʻi higher education transition specialist Zoe Leonard, high school media specialist BJ McCollum, and seniors Koali Ito and Kawehi Kiko.
