Building and real estate pros recently recognized the amazing transformation of KS’ Kapālama Center in Kalihi. The 51-year-old retail complex recently received a $7 million facelift aimed at revitalizing the neighborhood’s economic activity.
The National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) honored Kamehameha Schools with an Award of Excellence for the renovation of Kapālama Center. The award was given as part of NAIOP Hawaii’s Kūkulu Hale Awards which recognize excellence in the commercial real estate industry.
The project also garnered the Grand Award at the Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA) Renaissance Building and Remodeling Awards which celebrate excellence and collaborations in the building industry.
The $7 million renovation included improvements to the center’s façade, walkways, signage, plumbing and infrastructure. According to KS Area Development Director Catherine Camp, the Kapalama Center project was a kākou effort.
“Kamehameha was honored to be a part of this project and contribute to the vibrancy of this community,” said Camp. “I am so grateful for our team, including Senior Capital Program Manager Stan Iwamoto, Development Manager Sharon Gi, and Senior Asset Manager Eric Ogata for their hard work on this property.”
Over the years, KS has garnered three other awards from NAIOP. They include the Developer of the Year award and renovation awards for Windward Mall Food Court and Six Eighty Ala Moana.
NAIOP provides legislative representation, educational programs, and professional networking opportunities for its members who include real estate developers, owners, investors, and asset managers. BIA Hawaii is dedicated to ensuring competitiveness and growth of the construction industry in Hawaiʻi. Its members include developers, contractors, and suppliers.
