Kamehameha Schools embraces sustainability in many ways, from installing energy-saving air conditioning systems to supporting sustainable agriculture. In an effort to cultivate eco-conscious keiki, KS recently granted non-profit sustainability champion Sustain Hawaii $50,000 to produce an educational TV program called “Waltah the Worm.”
The 30-minute program is aimed at keiki in grades 2 through 7. In addition to TV, the high-tech, high-touch program uses web tools, activity books and more to educate keiki and the community on the importance of sustainability.
“If we want our keiki to be lifelong learners, then we must provide them with the best conditions in which they can learn,” says Sustain Hawaii chair Dr. Malia Smith. “This is precisely why our Waltah the Worm education program makes the world our classroom.”
The show is shot at Palaka Moon Farm, a 5-acre sustainability learning center in Waimānalo. The character of Waltah the eco-conscious worm is voiced by popular local comedian Tony Silva, who happily accepted the role.
“I get calls all the time to participate in new TV shows but what Dr. Smith has created with Waltah the Worm through all of her research and creativity is really something special,” says Silva.
The program features five key components:
The integration of technology through high-tech and high-touch efforts engages keiki in sustainability issues and also encourages them to build a healthy future for Hawaiʻi and the world.
