Standing in solidarity with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and educational institutions across the country, KS Kapālama and KS Maui haumāna took part in today's student-led walkouts supporting gun violence prevention. (KS Hawai‘i students plan to honor those lost in the shooting during a special chapel service.)

Today's voluntary walkouts began at 10 a.m. and lasted 17 minutes in honor of the 17 lives lost during last month’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Staff members at KS’ Kawaiaha‘o Plaza headquarters in Kaka‘ako at also gathered in remembrance of the victims. Kamehameha staff members across the state were encouraged to take a moment of silence at 10 a.m. wherever they were. 

He Pule
KS Maui Kahu Kalani Wong gave the following poignant pule to comfort staff and students:

“Almighty God, in whose perfect kingdom no strength is known but the strength of love, surround and comfort all those affected by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and all in the many schools who have experienced this kind of trauma and tragedy.

“We pray for an end to gun violence in our nation that our homes, schools, houses of worship and neighborhoods may become places of safety for all. Inspire us to act. Strengthen us to move. Compel us to serve. Embolden us to speak out. All this we ask in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen.”

KS Maui haumāna held the photos of the 17 victims while their names were read.

Kawaiaha‘o Plaza staffers also gathered in remembrance of the victims. Above, Community Relations Specialist Sam Kippen reads their names.
