A team of KS Maui students took home 63 individual medals and a first-place finish at the Hawai‘i Academic Decathlon (HIAD) held on Feb. 23 at Farrington High School.
With “The 1960s: A Transformational Decade” as this year’s theme, student teams competed by taking seven objective tests in literature, science, social science, music, art, mathematics and economics, as well as participated in three subjective events – essay, speech and interview. The competition also included a team Super Quiz Relay.
The KS Maui team – made up of senior Jaimelee Felipe and juniors Michael Kalalau, Kobe Lilio, Keawe Mann, Makena Nagasako, Lansen Nitahara, Tatiana Soon and Kahiau Vida – began preparing for HIAD in May 2018 with kōkua from U.S. history kumu Lesley Pico-Lilio.
Mann earned the competition’s highest overall score, which was instrumental in KS Maui claiming its first state title.
The team will represent Hawai‘i in the Small School Division at the U.S. Academic Decathlon (USAD) in Minnesota from April 25-27, 2019.
With the win, KS Maui joins KS Hawai‘i on the list of past winners. The Hawai‘i campus, in particular, has won nine HIAD titles, including seven consecutive titles from 2012-2018.
