KS Maui cleans up at 2015 Nā Mele O Maui competition

KS Maui haumāna recently won nine awards including the ‘Ōpio Division (Grades 9-12), taking home top honors at the 42nd Nā Mele O Maui Song and Art Competition, at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

The county-wide competition is dedicated to the preservation of Native Hawaiian culture through Hawaiian music, language and arts.

KSM high school haumāna won the Overall Award, capturing the highest score, while also winning the Hawaiian Language Award and first place in the ‘Ōpio Division. Led by high school music kumu Dale Nitta and Hawaiian performance kumu Kalei ‘A‘arona-Lorenzo, the winning team performed the song, “Ka Lehua ‘Ula,” and their choice song, “Waika.”

KS Maui also took first place in Division III (Grades 4-5), led by music kumu Dane Lum Ho, singing “Kilakila O Maui” and “Kipahulu,” and Division IV (Grades 6-8), led by language kumu Leimamo Nitta, singing “Aloha Kaua‘i” and “Kaua‘i Beauty.”

In the art competition, KS Maui students took first, second and third in the Two-Dimensional Artwork Division and second in the Three-Dimensional Artwork Division.

In the 2-D Division, freshman Kerisyn Gilbert won the first place prize of $100, with sophomore Kyana Nagasato taking second ($75) and freshman Puili Villanueva placing third ($50). Junior Kanilea Nomura placed second, winning $75 in the 3-D Artwork Division. All art students were taught by art kumu Angie Abe.

This marked the second time in a row that the KSM ‘Ōpio Division won the overall award, also winning it in 2013, while the competition was not held in 2014.
