Kamehameha Schools has created a series of Hawaiian-focused devotionals for the season of Lent to honor the deep Christian faith of KS founder Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18 and ends on Easter Sunday April 5.

Although the devotionals were designed with students in mind, they can also be used by families or individuals to celebrate the coming of Easter.

“The season of Lent is the time that we spend reflecting on the gift that God gave us in his son Jesus Christ,” says KS Maui Kahu (Chaplain) Kalani Wong. “It is a time for us to reflect on what that gift truly means to us and how we may be better people while we still have the chance.”

Each Lent devotional includes:

  • A scripture reading in ʻolelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) and English
  • Some manaʻo (thoughts)
  • Questions to ponder
  • A pule (prayer)
  • A lesson, pule and activity especially for keiki
  • Some also include a hīmeni (hymn)

Kahu Wong, KS Kapālama Kahu Kordell Kekoa and KS Cultural Specialist Hauʻoli Akaka teamed up to develop the devotional series and asked KS faculty and staff members to share their manaʻo (thoughts) of what lent means to them.

“We hope that the messages in the devotionals will provide our extended Kamehameha Schools ‘ohana with strength and encouragement during this special time of the year.”
