Kamehameha Schools recently held a blessing to commence construction on an Our Kakaʻako rental housing project for middle-income earners. The yet-to-be-named project is slated for completion in fall 2016.

The low-rise, six-story building at the corner of Pohukaina and Keawe streets will include 88 residential units made up of 40 studios, and a mixture of one-, two- and three-bedroom units.

“In Our Kakaʻako, a broad spectrum of housing options is being planned. This project, located at 440 Keawe Street, helps to fill the great need for rental housing for local, middle-income residents,” says Our Kaka‘ako Marketing Manager Erin Kinney.

More than 40 guests joined KS leaders at the blessing. They represented general contractor Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, subcontractor Concrete Coring Company and independent developer Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii who is responsible for an adjacent fee-simple project.

“Every time you turn over a stone, history is changed,” said KS kahu Kordell Kekoa, as he blessed the site. “Kakaʻako was significant to our aliʻi and will continue to be a special place for our people as this place grows.”

The project is KS’ second rental project in Our Kaka‘ako. The first residential project – Six Eighty, located at 680 Ala Moana Blvd. – was a finalist for a National Association of Home Builders award in 2013.

Our Kaka‘ako spans nine city blocks and is bordered by Ala Moana Boulevard, Halekauwila Street, South Street and Ward Avenue. It is home to a growing legion of local eateries, creative makers, unique gathering spaces. By fall 2015, construction of SALT, a retail and dining marketplace near the corner of Ala Moana Boulevard and Keawe Street, will be complete. To learn more, visit www.ourkakaako.com.
