Kamehameha Schools and the Polynesian Voyaging Society have forged an enduring partnership to build local and global leaders through Hawaiian culture-based education. As part of our efforts to educate and build thriving communities, KS and PVS will sponsor a Hōkūle‘a-inspired community mural project in Kaka‘ako on Saturday, August 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The mural project kicks off PVS’ membership drive. Those who make a small donation will have the opportunity to help paint a portion of the mural. Donations will directly support PVS’ mission, canoe maintenance and community programs including “Nā Kelamoku,” a youth leadership initiative which cultivates the next generation of Hawai‘i navigators and explorers.

KS has provided the canvas for the artistic endeavor. The mural will be painted at The Flats at Pu‘unui apartment complex at 440 Keawe St. between Auahi and Pohukaina streets on KS land.

The family-friendly event will include a celebration at nearby shopping and dining destination SALT at Kaka‘ako. Guests can listen to stories by Hōkūleʻa crew members and enjoy shopping discounts and entertainment including Hoʻo Wong, Kaohu Smith and the Hawaiian Airlines Hālau. Ke Kula o Samuel M. Kamakau will present the opening chant and mele.

Kamehameha Schools' commercial properties support its educational endeavors, and by partnering with organizations and businesses throughout the community, people and places thrive.

PVS perpetuates the art and science of traditional Polynesian voyaging and the spirit of exploration through experiential educational programs that inspire learners of all ages to care for themselves, one other, and their natural and cultural environments.
