Kilohana Summer Program keiki not only learned about the rich history of Puuokapolei, but also spent hours cleaning up litter and beautifying the area with lā‘ī plantings.

Haumāna in KS’ Kilohana Summer Program in ʻEwa recently embarked on a walking huaka‘i to Pu‘uokapolei. The pilot program serves 45 ‘Ewa region third graders learning through a Hawaiian culture- and place-based educational approach.
The culturally significant site was home to the largest and most sacred heiau in the ahupua‘a of Honouliuli as a place of governance and the home of Kamaunuaniho, who served as the region’s konohiki. Keiki not only learned about the rich history of the area, but also spent hours cleaning up litter and beautifying the area with lā‘ī plantings.
The program is administered by KS’ Kealapono Department, which is housed within its Kūamahi Community Education Division.
