Kau ka pe‘a, holo ka wa‘a!  The sails are set, let's go!

Kamehameha Schools is a proud sponsor of the Polynesian Voyaging Society's Mālama Honua Voyage, a historic multi-year journey being made by Polynesian voyaging canoes Hōkūle‘a and Hikianalia to circumnavigate the globe.  The Mālama Honua Voyage serves as a catalyst for awareness and action on how to care for “Island Earth” and all humankind.

In support of this monumental endeavor, Kamehameha Schools will be offering a variety of exciting educational tools and services to engage the KS ‘ohana with the voyage. These wa‘a-related resources will be accessible online in a special section of the Ka‘iwakīloumoku website.  Each quarter, a brand new set of materials will be released, all designed to be equally useful in the school, business, and home environments.

The following educational tools and services will be offered on the Ka‘iwakīloumoku website:

  • ‘Ōlelo no‘eau (wise saying and proverbs)
  • Mo‘olelo (traditional stories)
  • Annotated bibliographies
  • Lesson outlines
  • Menu of presentations delivered by Ho‘okahua staff
  • Strategies to engage the Mālama Honua Voyage
  • Brief video profiles of KS alumni navigators and crew members

The resource list is a direct result of collective feedback gathered from a cross section of KS staff including teachers, curriculum coordinators, administrators and support staff in May 2014. Their valuable insights contributed greatly to the momentum behind this initiative.

The site went live on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014 to coincide with the rising of the Kū Kolu moon (the fifth night of the lunar month).

Supporting the Worldwide Voyage

Kamehameha Schools has pledged $2 million in support of the Mālama Honua Voyage, the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s four-year Worldwide Voyage of Hōkūle‘a and its sister canoe Hikianalia.

KS joins several educational partners including the University of Hawai‘i, the State Department of Education and Bishop Museum to create and distribute a broad spectrum of learning materials intended to share the lessons, experiences and inspirations gained throughout the journey.
