Kamehameha Schools collaborates with prestigious English museum for new exhibition

Sept. 19, 2024

Kamehameha Schools collaborated with Pitt Rivers Museum – University of Oxford in England to support the launch of the “Ma uka to Ma kai: Back to the Future with Ahupuaʻa” exhibition on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 (Kamehameha Day). The Pitt Rivers Museum exhibition aims to showcase the significance of the ahupuaʻa and celebrate the Hawaiian culture.

Wendy Oliver and Ben Leong from Enterprise Technology’s Education Technology Services and Alison Makanui-Lopes and Nicole Souza from Kamehameha Schools Preschools attended and supported the exhibition by sharing their manaʻo and experiences of developing the Ahupuaʻa iPad app, facilitating its effective integration in the early learning curriculum and explaining the intent and purpose of the app through public engagement sessions and educational talks.

In the public engagement sessions, the KS team interacted with museum visitors and engaged them with the Ahupuaʻa interactive map using the technology developed in the KS Preschools-Enterprise Technology Services collaboration. Their expertise of the Ahupuaʻa app undoubtedly enhanced the visitor experience and contributed to a deeper understanding of the Hawaiian culture and the significance of the ahupuaʻa system.

The KS limahana also offered educational talks about the use of learning technology to Oxford-based educators. Sharing their first-hand experiences and insights with an international audience of educators was invaluable in fostering innovation and collaboration in the field of learning technology. These two activities, which were repeated over multiple days, highlighted the exceptional work of KS Preschools and their collaboration with Enterprise Technology.  They also served as an inspiring example of global cooperation and educational advancement.
This international connection between Kamehameha Schools and the Pitt Rivers Museum – Oxford University is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in the field of education, and an exciting opportunity to showcase Hawaiian culture and inspire educators worldwide.
The collaboration also included manaʻo, support and guidance from: Randie Fong (KS Executive Cultural Officer), Darrel Hoke (KS VP of Administration), Shelli Kim (KS Preschools Poʻo Kula), Dean Tomita (KS Enterprise Technology Executive Director) and Ron Cox (Director, Kamehameha Publishing).
