Congratulations are in order for KS Internal Communications Manager Ed Kalama, who was recently honored by the Hawaiʻi chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) for his work on two Kamehameha Schools' communications projects.
PRSA Hawaii received 150 entries in the industry awards competition this year, with work judged by the Chicago chapter of PRSA.
Kalama earned Koa Hammer awards of excellence for his editing of “The Print Report” in the Internal Newsletters category and a second award in the Feature Writing category for his “Growing Leaders” story which appeared in the Winter 2014 issue of I Mua magazine.
Since joining Kamehameha Schools in 2000, Kalama has received a total of 10 awards from PRSA Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiʻi chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators for his work in communicating the news and issues surrounding the organization.
“I hadn’t entered any projects since 2007, so we needed to see if I still had it!” Kalama joked. “They put my name on these awards, but in reality these honors are representative of everyone in our Communications Group because we all have a very kākou style of working in our group.”
“The Print Report” supported Kamehameha’s Project Greenprint initiative, tallying actual print costs by location in the organization against a budget goal, along with offering tips on responsible printing to employees.
“Growing Leaders” chronicled the story of MAʻO Organic Farms and its relationship with Kamehameha Schools as an example of how collaborations with existing, successful community programs with similar goals as KS can extend the organization’s reach for greater collective impact on Hawaiian learners.
Kalama extends a big “mahalo” to the following Communications team members for lending their talents to the winning projects: Digital Innovation Manager Andreas Arvman, Digital Media Specialist Todd Masui, Senior Procurement Manager Kelly Ibara, Visual Communications Specialist Ed Subia, and Photographer Michael Young.
Kalama’s article “Growing Leaders” from KS’ I Mua magazine won a PRSA Award of Excellence.
