The budding young journalists of KS Maui's student newspaper "Ka Leo O Nā Koa" took first place in a national publication contest with its special safe driving issue, “Decide to Drive.”
The four-page issue talks about the dangers of distracted driving, including student testimonies, a student survey and ways to get involved in safety advocacy.
The winning team – including students Jaylin Kekiwi, Maile Sur, Daisy Draper and Destinee Murray – won a $1,000 cash prize. "Ka Leo O Nā Koa" advisor Kye Haina was awarded a tablet.
The “Decide to Drive: A Student Advocacy Program” contest was created in partnership with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Auto Alliance and Scholastic, Inc.
Since 2007, the newspaper has won over 20 “Best in State” awards. They include sweeping the online and print division awards at the 2013 Hawai‘i High School Journalism Awards, garnering the online division award in 2012, and winning the overall award in 2011.
