In reading about Kamehameha, students learned that he and the people that loved him had a goal for him to become a great and warrior. To meet this goal he had a plan and many people that helped him.
Those people protected and taught him as a child and as a young man. Students made the connection that they also have people in their own lives that protect and teach them. These people, their family and their many kumu, will help them to realize their dreams.
It is one thing to set goals, but it is another to set forth a plan and follow it through. Doing this will take a lot of hard work. The students also made the connection that Kamehameha was successful because he was a dedicated student. He listened to his teachers, trained hard to become strong and worked hard to learn everything he needed to know to lead his people. The students practiced some of these strength building exercises such as arm wrestiling (uma) and foot pushing. They learned that it took strength and stamina to keep the foot pushing going between themselves and their partner. In class they are working to build stamina in reading and writing by participating in both activities a little longer each day.
After reading about Kamehameha and discussing what led to him realize his dream, students brainstormed on what they could do to become a better student. They made a list of goals and prepared a storyboard on how they planned to achieve them. Next they began work on a Book Creator project to showcase their strategy. With the plan set and a full year of work and reflection ahead there is no stopping these young warriors.
