This week, Papa ʻEhā partnered with the East Maui Watershed to learn about the importance of a watershed and how it has been impacted by civilization and the introduction of invasive species. Using an interactive model, students were able to see how our watersheds function and how it has changed over time. Students were engaged in discussions to problem solve natural resource management and brainstorm ways they can conserve water.
This activity is a part of a year long unit on studying the importance of the ʻōhiʻa tree in our Hawaiian ecosystem. The Overarching Understanding for this unit is “I Ola ʻOe, I Ola Mākou Nei- When you thrive, we thrive.” Students apply this thinking to everything they learn about the Hawaiian Rainforest to understand why it is so important for us to preserve our resources now so we will be able to thrive as a people in the future.
To help preserve our East Maui Watershed, you may donate to East Maui Watershedʻs Adopt-a-Fence program. This program provides supplies needed to build and maintain fences around our rainforests to protect our resources!
