History Day Winners Qualify For State Competition

Feb. 28, 2017

Contributed by Thomas Jones

On Saturday, February 18th,  the Maui District History Day was held at the University of Hawaii, Maui College.  The theme for 2017 is Taking a Stand in History.  Each year National History Day uses a theme to provide a lens through which students can examine history.  Our 8th grade U.S. History class submitted six website entries. One group qualified for states and will be moving on to the state competition set for Saturday, April 15th on Oahu.

Congratulations to Bailey Ventura, Kahealani Haupu, and Teani Kaluhikaua who created a website titled, “Newsboys Revolt.” In 1899 the newsboys stopped selling Pulitzer and Hearst's newspapers and started protesting on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. They did this because they weren't getting paid enough. This inspired later strikes and was the intro of urban child welfare.
