Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi Kula Kiʻekiʻe presents Hōʻike 2023: PAIʻEA, a glam rock opera in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.
This show was recorded before a live audience on Friday, March 10 as part of Hōʻike 2023. Our annual Hōʻike is a treasured signature event for our kula. PAIʻEA honors the chiefly lineage of our kula, and celebrates the life and achievements of Kamehameha Paiʻea, the great-grandfather of Ke Aliʻi Pauahi. This powerful moʻolelo is brought to life with a contemporary twist, as a glam rock opera.
It's now available for on-demand viewing on the KS YouTube channel or on the Kamehameha Hawaiʻi Facebook page. Watch or re-watch (anytime) the incredible job by our Hōʻike A Haʻi haumāna and entire kula kiʻekiʻe in putting together this year’s production, honoring the early life of our kula’s namesake, Kamehameha Paiʻea. The Thursday night performance recording will drop on 6/11 in celebration of Kamehameha Day.
Beyond the live presentation and recording, PAIʻEA will live on as a story as our performing arts students plan to take this show to the world's largest performing arts festival in Scotland, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this summer. They will also present the traveling version of the show three additional times on our Island:
July 8 at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea
July 14, here on the KS Hawaiʻi campus at the William Charles Lunalilo Center
July 21 at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo
