This year's Hōʻike is a teaser for next year's return to the big stage, featuring a workshop performance of Act I of the rock opera, Paiʻea.

Hōʻike 2022: Paiʻea Workshop Premiere

May. 19, 2022

The first in a trilogy of rock opera performances around our kula's namesake, Kamehameha.

Hōʻike 2022 is a workshop performance of Act I of the rock opera, Paiʻea, focusing on the life of Kamehameha from birth to the Battle of Mokuʻōhai. The story features many of the moʻolelo so many of our haumāna are familiar with, bringing new life to those stories with a contemporary twist with the hope of making it more accessible to a broader audience.

Hōʻike 2022 will premiere today, Thursday, May 19 at 4:15 p.m. on the KS YouTube channel and be available for on-demand viewing after that. This workshop performance of Paiʻea will be a part of the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo's Hana Keaka Festival next month, presented virtually. Keep a look out for the Hana Keaka festival cut of this workshop during that. The show will then grow to be featured as next year's Kula Kiʻekiʻe Hōʻike, and then be adapted to travel to Scotland to be presented during the American High School Theatre Festival at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Following the premiere, a BEHIND THE SCENES look at Paiʻea, hosted by senior Starlye Koehler will be available to hear more insights about the show from kumu and haumāna involved in the production, and how it came together. Watch kumu and cast interviews, rehearsal footage, and even some fun outtakes. Behind the Scenes: Paiʻea will premiere tonight at 5 p.m.
