Here’s how to celebrate Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawaiʻi with your ʻohana

Jan. 27, 2025

Long live the Hawaiian language! This February, dive deeper into ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and Hawaiian culture for Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi.

While many today know a few Hawaiian words, the language nearly vanished after an 1896 ban prohibited teaching and speaking Hawaiian in schools. For 91 years, generations were cut off from their native identity and tongue despite Hawaiʻi being one of the most literate nations in the world prior to the ban.

The 1970s Hawaiian Renaissance reignited cultural pride, sparking efforts to restore ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi through immersion schools and community initiatives. At Kamehameha Schools, we now recognize that language revitalization is key to cultivating future ʻōiwi leaders who embrace their identity and kuanaʻike to uplift our lāhui.

Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi celebrates this journey of resurgence. It’s more than just throwing in “aloha” or “mahalo” in your everyday vernacular. It’s about connecting, learning and watching the language thrive for generations to come! Since 2020, Ola Ka ʻĪ events have brought families across Hawaiʻi together with games, speeches and community fun.
