The Hawaii News Now Sunrise team will broadcast live from Haleʻiwa Store Lots on Friday, May 1 to mark the official opening of the 27,000-square-foot commercial center. The morning show will highlight the center’s 20 stores and how Kamehameha Schools is working with the community to revitalize Kamehameha’s properties in Haleʻiwa Town.

The $16 million revitalization project by Kamehameha Schools broke ground in 2013. With the input provided by area kūpuna, longtime North Shore residents and community leaders, the store lots honor the historic plantation character of Hale‘iwa and the unique small businesses that make it a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike.

One recent visitor – AOL founder and former local boy Steve Case – shared his sentiments about the center.

“My wife and I hiked at Kaʻena Point this morning and then stopped by Matsumoto’s,” said Case. “The new Store Lots shopping and dining area is fabulous. I know when it was announced there was a lot of grumbling of the planned changes, but Kamehameha took the risk and moved forward. And in the process, what was great about the area was preserved, but a fabulous new shopping village was created in an authentic local style.  It looks like a win-win and that is the kind of risk we need to see more of in Hawaiʻi.  So thanks for – again – being a role model!”

The new project is part of KS’ North Shore Plan, which was developed with significant input and consultation with the community and public agencies.

“The grand opening of Haleʻiwa Store Lots marks a milestone for KS on the North Shore,” says Senior Land Asset Manager, Kalani Fronda. “As one of KS’ North Shore Catalyst Projects, it is a combination of history, hospitality and community.”

Highlights of Haleʻiwa Store Lots include:

  • Restoration and preservation of five historic buildings
  • Construction of a pedestrian-safe walkway
  • 20 local shops and restaurants
  • Public restrooms
  • Free public parking
