Haku Pelaha

Po 'alima  'Ula 'ula Sign Making

Nov. 4, 2016

Contributed by Leah Santo

Haumāna work diligently on their creations for Pelaha Pōʻalima ʻUlaʻula (Red Friday Signs) which occured on ʻOkakopa 28, 2016. Our entire Kula Haʻahaʻa went on a huakaʻi hele i Kahului to our very own UH Maui College, where kumu and practioners alike enriched our haumāna with ʻike Hawaiʻi. The theme this year was Aloha ʻĀina: Maui. The keiki learned oli, hula, native planting, nā wai ʻehā, mele, moku, ʻahupuaʻa, digital media, lawaiʻa, moʻolelo ʻo Maui, and many-many more cultural practices.
Following the break out sessions, we enjoyed our ʻāina awakea (lunch) and headed to Kaʻahumanu avenue, where we participated in a sign waiving event. This was an opportunity to rekindle Kamehameha Mauiʻs first Pōʻalima ʻUlaʻula that occurred at that same spot in 2008. The haumāna were so excited and thoroughly enjoyed embracing our kaiaulu (community) last week!! Kū Haʻaheo Kākou...
