Grade 7 Health Class Is CPR Certified

March 1, 2018

Contributed by Thomas Jones

Kumu Patao thought it would beneficial for students to learn how to perform CPR and First Aid in his health curriculum. To do this he enlisted the help of firemen and a retired dentist to help give the students proper training. Each of his classes had 4 visits to learn the materials before taking a hands-on assessment. The students learned concepts and applied techniques using CPR dummies.

During the assessment, students must take action by checking for responsiveness, breathing, pulse, and shout for help to call for emergency response. They must also know the proper timing and amount for giving chest compressions and breaths. The last part of the assessment is to use an AED defibrillator correctly. Once proficiency is demonstrated the administrator either passes or fails the student. All of Kumu Patao's students passed!

Congrats to our haumāna for contributing to public safety!
