Faculty gathered early in the morning to kōkua (help) at Kapikohānaiāmālama. Ekela Kaniaupio-Crozier, Hawaiian Protocol Facilitator, gave a lesson showing the parallels in ancient Hawaiian culture and modern teaching methods and techniques that can all be applied to today's education. The faculty was led by Nio Kindla, Garden Educator who instructed them on how to care for the plants and assigned tasks to groups. Tasks included cleaning trees, planting trees, fertilizing plants, and general care of the area. The result was that the Kapikohānaiāmālama area was beautified and the faculty have a deeper appreciation for ancient Hawaiian methods of caring for their garden. In the future kumu will be passing this knowledge and the techniques learned to the haumāna when they conduct activities in the gardens.
