For National School Choice Week, HPRʻs The Conversation focused on education in Hawaiʻi.

Education innovation highlighted on The Conversation

As part of a week-long spotlight for National School Choice week, The Conversation on Hawaiʻi Public Radio hosted a panel discussion on new and old ideas in education.

Kamehameha Schools Senior Education Consultant and Kealaʻula Innovations Institute Co-Director Dr. Evan Beachy particpated in the discussion along with Dr. Jim Shon, the Director of the Hawai'i Educational Policy Center at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa and Sione Thompson, executive director of the Hawaiʻi Public Charter School Commission. The Conversation is hosted by Catherine Cruz and Chris Vandercook.

New Hawaiʻi Department of Education superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto was also able to join in the discussion.

Panel participants discussed a variety of options including the role of Hawaiian culture-based education, how K-12 standards and evaluations should affect the college admissions process, the impact and inequalities in funding for our public charter schools and more.
