The National Art Education Association has named Diane Fell, of Makawao, HI, to receive the 2018 Hawaii Art Educator of the Year Award. This award honors an outstanding member from each state or province association whose service and contribution to art education merits recognition and acclaim. The award will be presented at the NAEA National Convention in Seattle, WA, March 22-24, 2018.
NAEA President Kim Huyler Defibaugh states, "This award is being given to recognize excellence in professional accomplishment and service by a dedicated art educator. Diane Fell exemplifies the highly qualified art educators active in education today: leaders, teachers, students, scholars, and advocates who give their best to their students and the profession."
Diane Fell teaches elementary art at Kamehameha Schools Maui, a position she has held since 1999. A student-centered educator whose artistic and teaching practices have evolved alongside of her students in an environment of artistic discovery, Kumu Fell enjoys seeing student progress in and be recognized for their artistic expression and aesthetic awareness. Kumu Fell’s career at Kamehameha Schools started at the Kapālama campus on Oʻahu with three years of teaching high school art, which including courses like Honors Art History, Screen Printing, and Silver Jewelry Fabrication.
A versatile art teacher, Kumu Fell shared, “I am thankful for the 25 years of support from Kamehameha Schools which values the importance of art education and has made it possible for me to teach art and for students to engage in art making, win awards and go on to have careers in art. Through these years as an artist and teacher I have been blessed to have support from my family, fellow art teachers, Specialists, Classroom Teachers, and Administrators. I am also truly grateful for this recognition and want to mahalo the NAEA for this honor.”
NAEA is the professional association for art educators. Members include elementary, secondary, middle level and high school art teachers; university and college professors; education directors who oversee education in our nation’s fine art museums, administrators and supervisors who oversee art education in school districts, state departments of education, arts councils; and teaching artists throughout the United States and many foreign countries.
