Distance Learning Week 1 Recap

April 6, 2020

Contributed by Dutch Tanaka-Akana

Go L.I.V.E. (Learning In a Virtual Environment) started off strong!  Nā kumu created innovative and engaging ways to connect with haumāna to ensure that learning is taking place in homes all over the island from Upcountry to Lahaina, Wailuku to Hana and event to California and Alabama.  Nā kumu have committed to bringing their “A” game to distance learning: broadcasting synchronously, including teaching partners (teacher in disguise), and trying new tech tools.

Haumāna have been checking in their attendance daily using the Kula Waena Hotspot and reporting on how they are feeling.  Students report that they are ready to interact with classmates and kumu. Nā kumu have reported that the majority of our haumāna are submitting their work in a timely manner and that much of the work is meeting and exceeding expectations.  Haumāna are even helping kumu with some tech issues.

Our middle school parents are also getting involved in distance learning too.  They have been actively participating in learning alongside their children as well as ensuring that their children get enough sleep, keep to a daily routine, and carve out PDF (Playtime, Downtime & Family time).

We are all adapting at our own pace as we continue to Go L.I.V.E. and voyage through these uncharted waters, just as our ancestors did hundreds of years ago.  Pūpūkāhi I holomua – unite in order to progress. (Pukui 2758) We are also guided by our faith; as Kahu Wong has shared with us from Isaiah 41:13 “For I am the Lord your God, who upholds your right hand, Who says to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you.’”
