Friday's launch day will give us a chance to test and learn together about what our needs are as we shift to Distance Learning.

Distance Learning Plan Launch for Kula Waena

March 25, 2020

Contributed by Dr. Tehani Corcoran

Aloha mai kākou e na ʻohana o ke Kula Waena,

Our Distance Learning Plan (DLP) launches this Friday, March 27, 2020!

  • Email is our primary method of communication. Kumu will continue to be available during normal school hours (7:30 am - 3:30 pm) and will be actively answering emails during these times. Haumāna may have already begun receiving course-specific information directly from their kumu.
  • As our haumāna are familiar with Google Classroom, this will be the starting place for accessing all announcements, assignments, resources and materials.
  • By Friday of each week, Google classrooms will have been updated with all assignments and materials for the following week. The beauty of distance learning is that haumāna can access and work on these at their own pace as it suits their home schedules.
  • Kumu will offer weekly virtual “face-to-face” advisory sessions so that students can maintain pilina as well as receive guidance for managing their distance workloads.
  • Kumu will offer weekly virtual “face-to-face” office hours so that students can continually receive real-time help with assignments.
  • Additional synchronous learning sessions may also be offered by content kumu. Sessions will be recorded for haumāna to be able to view again, or watch playback if they were not able to live-join the session. Kumu will advertise these via email, Google classroom, and/or calendar invites that include links for those who can join online, and phone numbers for those who can join telephonically.
  • Haumāna joining synchronous sessions are expected to maintain the Kula Waena Code of Conduct and “free dress” guidelines per the Student and Parent Handbook.
  • Our ʻohana are welcome to listen and participate as appropriate in synchronous sessions. Please remember that these are not a time for “Parent Teacher Conferences”. Questions and concerns regarding specific students and/or their work should be sent to the kumu via email, and if necessary, a phone appointment can be made to address these.
  • Counselor support will continue, both academically and in regard to social-emotional wellbeing.

For technical issues with a school laptop, contact Mr. John Nordblom at 982-0466.

All other inquiries may be directed to our Kula Waena office at 982-0400.

Each grade-level will be sharing details regarding the DLP via a group “Zoom” meeting. Joining is as easy as clicking the shared link, but if youʻd like more information, watch a youtube video that shows you how.
