Course catalog for summer now available

Dec. 20, 2024

We hope that you and your ʻohana are enjoying a well-deserved Winter Break and have a safe and fun holiday!

It's also a time to think about your plans for summer. You can preview this summer's Kauluhala course offerings now on our website

Kauluhala weaves together the essence of Kauwela, our warmest time of year and the cool breezes found in the hala groves of Puna. The name Kauluhala centers the cultural significance of the Pūhala to the ʻāina of Puna, which is famous for its hala groves — Puna paia ʻala i ka hala, Puna, with its fragrant walls of pandanus blossoms. Kauwela, our warmest time of year, lifts the weight of the school year and creates a space for refreshing, joyous learning, an atmosphere of agentic, fun discovery for both haumāna and kumu. The name, a play on “ulu” for growth and exploration signifies the Pūhala grove, a place where keiki grow connected to ʻāina, to Puna, to lāhui, and to our kula, Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi.

Grounded by its past and inspired by our future, our Kauluhala Summer Academy promises to inspire passion for learning, excellence, and generational and global responsibility. Our team of dynamic educators, near and far, have designed new experiences that uncover the magic and hidden possibilities of summer learning for our haumāna. During the summer, these experiences will continue to compliment and challenge our reality, grow interests, ground us with kuleana, and prepare us for the now and into the future.

Leading this year's program once again are two highly respected Kamehameha Hawaiʻi educators -

  • Mr. Alan Kinoshita - Kauluhala Program Administrator, Grades K-8
  • Mr. Keali‘i Akina - Kauluhala Program Administrator, Grades 9-12
