Celebrating the life and legacy of Charles Reed Bishop

Jan. 25, 2025

Hauʻoli Lā Hānau e Mr. Bishop!

Yesterday, on January 24, 2025, our haumāna and kumu from grades K-8 gathered in Laʻamea Gym to celebrate the life and legacy of Mr. Charles Reed Bishop, beloved and dedicated husband of Ke Aliʻi Pauahi.

Born January 25, 1822 in Glens Falls, New York, Bishop, with his friend William Little Lee, arrived in Hawai‘i in 1846. Charles Reed Bishop married Princess Bernice Pauahi Pākī in 1850 and through their 34 years of marriage up until his death in 1915, he steadfastly loved her and worked to realize and carry forward her vision through his generosity and industrious nature. For his many contributions, we take this moment each year, on or near the day of his birth, to honor him and say mahalo.

Through mele, hula, manaʻo and worship, we honor Mr. Bishop and the commitment and aloha he demonstrated in carrying forward the legacy of Ke Aliʻi Pauahi.

Download the program from the 2025 Charles Reed Bishop Convocation at Kamehameha Hawaiʻi.

The recording of the Convocation is now available on the Kamehameha Schools YouTube Channel

Our K-8 take a moment each year to recognize Mr. Charles Reed Bishop and the aloha he had for our princess.
