Hawaiʻi is home to thousands of diverse flora, most of them only found here in the islands. Despite this, Hawaiʻi has lost more species to extinction than any other state, and there are over one million species in danger of extinction worldwide. Native Hawaiian Plant Month was established in 2020 to highlight the importance of safeguarding endangered native plants because their extinction detrimentally impacts the environment, topography, watersheds and climate of our home.

At Kamehameha Schools, we understand that ʻāina is more than just land; it’s a cornerstone of our cultural identity. Native and endemic plants are a crucial part of Kamehameha Schools’ kuleana to preserve and protect the unique ecosystems of our islands.

Join us in celebrating Native Hawaiian Plant Month by learning about indigenous plants' cultural and ecological importance, growing your greenery and advocating for their conservation! Come down to one of our Native Hawaiian Plant Educational Fairs and Mākeke, where the spirit of lāʻau Hawaiʻi comes to life. From hands-on activities for keiki to informative demonstrations and plant sales, this is your chance to connect to culture and activate ʻāina:

Participating organizations, businesses, and community members include Hui Kū Maoli Ola, Poi for Pepe, Papahana Kuaola, Windward Community College, Kūlaniākea, Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife  — Rare Plant Program and more.

The celebration doesn’t stop there! Keep your eyes peeled for native plants with fascinating moʻolelo at locations across ʻĀina Pauahi, from Windward Mall, Kū‘ono Market Place at Kāhala, Our Kaka‘ako, Pearl at Kalauao, Volcano Golf Course and Kolo Apartments. Every encounter is an opportunity to deepen your knowledge and connection to ʻāina!
