Beginning of the Year Convocation 2020

Oct. 12, 2020

Contributed by Shaundor Chillingworth

On behalf of Kahu Kaunaloa Boshard and Poʻo Kula Kāhealani Naeʻole-Wong, Kamehameha Hawaiʻi is proud to present our 2020 Beginning of the Year Convocation. Like with our End of the Year Convocation this past year, a pre-recorded production featuring mele and manaʻo from our haumāna, kumu, and alakaʻi premiered on the Kamehameha Schools YouTube channel on Sunday, October 11 at 6 p.m.

Convocation premiered as we returned from what we hope was a rejuvenating and restful Fall Break and kick-off our Pauahi Week, so that we could take a moment to ground ourselves in our kula's Christian commitment, come together in love of Ke Akua, and celebrate our Kamehameha Schools 2020-2021 Spiritual Theme, “E Kuʻupau Ke Aloha i Ke Akua a Mau Loa – Boundless and Timeless is Our Reverence for the Lord”.

Ke Ali‘i Pauahi was born eleven years after the arrival of the first Protestant missionaries to Hawai‘i in 1820. Both her parents, Abner Pākī and Laura Konia were among the first converts to Christianity and became members of Kawaiaha‘o Church. Pauahi herself became a member of Kawaiaha‘o Church in 1867. As a faithful member of the church, she taught Sunday School, Choral music and contributed to the community through outreach of the church. Through special traditions like this, we honor and affirm her steadfast Christian faith, ideals and service through Aloha I Ke Akua—Love for God, Aloha kekahi i kekahi—Love for one another, and Aloha ‘Āina—Love and care for the land and all of Ke Akua’s blessings. Her abiding faith in Ke Akua serves as a foundation of our Christian Hawaiian values.
