A holiday whose celebration dwindled for many of years, is now being revived. As we shed light on this day, our fifth grade class watched video on the importance of the holiday to our culture and history. They sang mele in honor of their kūpuna, whose voices and efforts are the reason why we celebrate. They also discussed what the holiday meant to them and our lāhui. Haumāna made cultural connections between our own people and that of other indigenous cultures that they are studying in class like the Native Americans, Inuit and Hispanics. Pride was the overwhelming feeling felt througout the day by our rising lāhui. Here were some of their thoughts:
“I am very happy that Lā Kūʻokoʻa is coming back”
“Let’s keep Lā Kūʻokoʻa going!!!”
“I think Hawaiʻi should be independant”
“Today makes me more proud ot be a HAWAIIAN”
