We hope that you and your ʻohana are well and had an enjoyable and well-deserved Spring Break!
Kamehameha Hawaiʻi remains steadfast in our commitment to student safety. Our kula will be conducting a comprehensive violence prevention and response training next month which will require a no-school day for each of our divisions. We want to provide your ʻohana with sufficient notice so you can make appropriate arrangements for that day.
While nationally the expectations and probability for active threat/active shooter incidents to happen is low, all of our faculty and staff should be prepared to respond. Most of our safety drills occur with students. However, the nature of this drill would be disruptive to a normal school day and will engage teachers, school leaders and support staff with a deeper level of understanding and preparedness that is best practice, should we need to act. Kamehameha Schools strongly believes in a layered approach to safety, with early warning and recognition, early intervention, and a prepared response.
To be able to hold these interactive exercises with our instructional faculty and staff, students will not have school on the day selected for their division:
For additional reference, Friday, April 21, is also a K-12 Teacher In-Service day. More information will be provided at a later date through coaches or kumu if games/practices for sports or after-school activities are scheduled for that day.
We appreciate your partnership and understanding in making these adjustments. Should you have any specific questions about the training, please contact Ken Kaleiwahea at 982-0040.
