Seniors dominate awards at the 102nd annual Kamehameha Schools Song Contest

Sophomore girls' director Selah Fronda and senior co-ed director Chase Kamikawa were named co-winners of the Louise Aoe McGregor Award for outstanding student directing.

The senior class took six of the seven available awards at the to the 102nd annual Kamehameha Schools Song Contest Friday night at the Neal Blaisdell Center.

The theme of this year’s event was Ola Mau ʻO Kamehameha: Celebrating our Kamehameha Musical Legacy.

Senior class co-ed director Chase Kamikawa earn top honors in outstanding student director along with sophomore girl’s director Selah Fronda.

The senior boys captured the ʻŌlelo Makuahine award recognizing excellence in the use of Hawaiian language, the Helen Dasha Beamer award for the outstanding musical performance and the George Alanson Andrus Cup (outstanding performance in the boys’ division).

The senior girls won the New England Mothers Cup for outstanding performance in the girls’ division.

Encore presentations of the preshow and competition will be on Friday, March 18 beginning at 7 p.m. on KGMB and on Sunday, March 20 at 2 p.m. on KHNL.

The Louise Aoe McGregor Award (outstanding student director):
Winner: (TIE) Selah Fronda (sophomore girls) and Chase Kamikawa (senior co-ed).

The Richard Lyman, Jr., ‘Ōlelo Makuahine (Mother Tongue) Award (outstanding use of the Hawaiian language):
Winner: Men of the Class of 2022 (senior boys)

New England Mothers’ Cup (girl’s competition):
Winner: Class of 2022 (Seniors), Mālie Lyman (song director)

George Alanson Andrus Cup (boy’s competition):
Winner: Class of 2022 (Seniors), Kīwa‘a Hermosura (song director)

Helen Desha Beamer Award (outstanding musical performance):
Winner: Men of the Class of 2022 (senior boys)

Charles Edward King Cup (combined class competition):
Winner: Class of 2022 (Seniors), Chase Kamikawa (song director)
