8th grade haumāna took a huakaʻi (excursion) to the University of Hawai'i Maui College in Kahalui for college and career day. Students visited the various departments on campus including; Media/Audio/Video Technology, Agriculture/Food & Natural Resources, Hospitality & Tourism, and Early Childhood. They arrived on campus and hit the ground running by attending the job fair where local businesses and organizations were seeking out potential candidates to fill positions. Students met with representatives asking questions about relevant skills and requirements to work at the organizations.
After the job fair students went to breakout sessions where they visited the various departments on campus. Each presentation showed a glimpse as to what it's like to work in the accompanying field with hands on activities like tending to crops and making mulch for example in the agriculture department. Students we able to get hands on with broadcast quality equipment in the media department using cameras, mics, video switchers, lighting, and more.
It was a great experience for students to be able to dip their feet into college life by being exposed to the educational opportunities and potential careers available to them in the near future.
