7th Grade Haumāna Use Their Green Thumbs and Learn About the 'Uala Plant

April 5, 2018

Contributed by Thomas Jones

Grade 7 students have been going to Ka Piko Hānāiāmālama twice a month throughout this school year.  Our current focus is this beautiful māla of ‘uala.  Students have been working with Kumu Ulu to learn about planting and caring for this special food source.  We also recently harvested some ‘uala from another māla in the garden and grilled up some yummy sweet potato chips and now students are very interested and focus on growing great ‘uala...food is a totally excellent motivator for middle school students it seems!!!
