In Kumu Leah and Kumu Kawehiʻs 21st century Hawaiian Club, haumana practiced typing skills and then went to kumukahi.org to learn about various Hawaiian cultural practices, to explore keywords and phrases and to see and hear from some of the most well known cultural practitioners.

Seen here are students, Liliaonālani and Mahea, watching a video on Lāʻau Lapaʻau which they will then discuss together and share their important takeaway with the class.

We also colored and drew images of Hawaiian items of interest to the students.  Some colored native Hawaiian birds while we listened to the song of each native bird on the iPad and practiced the correct pronunciation of each birdʻs name.  Nā haumana also drew their own images surrounding makahiki and shared with the class.

Haumana in the 21st Century Club are also in the process of building their waʻa kaulua using recycled materials. We are learning about the parts of the Hokuleʻa, the different Hale in the Star Compass used for Navigating, and learning.  Studying the Hōkūleʻa has helped students to appreciate the intelligence of our kūpuna and look to Nainoa Thompson as a model 21st Century Hawaiian.
