He manaʻo o ke kahu
I’ve recently spent time undergoing cataract surgery and recovery on my left eye, followed by work on my right. I wasn’t aware that I had cataracts until an eye exam in the spring revealed this situation in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively opaque, resulting in blurred vision. My optometrist said that my case was still mild, but I would need to have the surgery done eventually. And so, I made plans to get it taken cared of while I had the opportunity. Like any surgery, I was a little anxious but as I met with my surgeon, I was put at ease. On the day after my first surgery, I was able to take off the protective eye shield and was pleasantly surprised how clear my vision was. Since the cataract had occurred over time, I hadn’t noticed the decline in my eyesight. Slight as it was, my new vision was great. I can’t wait to see what having two renewed eyes will look like.

We all want to see with clear eyes and there may be times when it feels all is good. Little do we know just how dim our vision has become. That goes for our spiritual sight as well. Let’s find a way to renew our sight on ke Akua, that our spiritual eyes might be refreshed and made new. As our maka are made new, we shall clearly see the, “wonderful things from your Law,” his law which was made that we might have a right pilina with our Lord. This pilina pono will give us a glimpse of what is to come. “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.” Such is the aloha, the grace, of ke Akua that is always looking out for us, always ready to draw us into his midst. Open your eyes this day to see what ‘Iehova is doing and how his angels are always standing guard over you.
